In the lifelong attempt of improving studying to make learning more effective, we often focus on developing and changing our resources, study techniques and habits, and even our personal lifestyle as each factor affects our education. However, we tend to bypass an environmental factor– specifically pertaining to the colors of your surroundings. In our brains, there are neurological pathways that when stimulated, can create biochemical responses that conditions your brain and body to function at maximum productivity during study sessions. These biochemical responses are elicited by colors. According to Shift (2023), adding colors to your study environment can positively impact your mood, concentration, and productivity in studying and overall learning. With this, let’s discover the many different colors that can help you through your academic journey.

Green: Focus and Efficiency

Because of the color green being of low wavelength, it stimulates tranquility and composure, boosting focus and efficiency. In the long-term, it will induce heightened concentration and clarity. Moreover, studies have shown proof of the positive effects of adding green to your environment. Research has shown that employees who work in green offices have higher rates of job satisfaction and higher rates of work performance.

Blue: Productivity

If your study sessions are intense, blue is the right color for you. This color is said to be more helpful when the work involved in studying requires more of your cognitive functions such as memorization, problem solving, and heavy reading. With blue, one can be more productive even when the work is more challenging. Light shades of blue will seem more friendly and helpful, but the darker shades will seem colder and gloomy. So, it is best to use other colors such as orange to go together with the right shade of blue– ensuring your surroundings give you the right vibe of color.

Orange: Mood Booster

According to research, the color orange increases oxygen supply to the brain and eases one’s discomfort. This helps the brain feel more revitalized and more capable of accomplishing tasks. Orange can also be used to give emphasis to details as it can improve one’s attention levels on things associated with orange. This is why orange is a common color of highlighting pens. Using this color must be in moderation because too much orange can stimulate excess energy– making one prone to being overwhelmed.

Understanding the biochemical impact of colors to studying can improve your overall study routine as it helps with both reinforcing your brain’s cognitive functions and your habits that ensures consistent development of molding your knowledge and skills. Different colors stimulate the brain in different ways. Make sure to use the right color for the right studying situations. Additionally, do not forget to use these colors in decent amounts and to use it with colors that complement them to avoid straining your eyes and affecting your brain negatively. Adding colors to your environment not only makes your surroundings more pleasing to the eyes, but also makes you better equipped for academic success! Ace all your academic endeavors with flying colors– with colors!
