10 Tips to Help You Prep Right and Perform Your Best
Getting into the University of the Philippines (UP) is a dream for many students, and it starts with passing the UPCAT. This exam is known for being competitive, challenging, and time-pressured. But with the right preparation, mindset, and strategy, you can increase your chances of making it into your dream university.
Here are 10 essential tips from AHEAD Tutorial & Review to help you navigate your UPCAT journey confidently.

- Print Your Test Permit Properly
Once test permits are available, print yours on letter-sized paper (8.5 x 11″). Make sure all details are clear, especially your name and photo. Don’t write on it or share digital copies. Keep an extra printed copy just in case. - Know Your Test Center
Avoid unnecessary stress by knowing where you’re going. If possible, visit your test center ahead of time to get familiar with the location. If you can’t, check maps and ask around. Knowing the route, the entrance, and even where to park or commute can make your test day smoother. - Study According to the UPCAT Coverage
The exam covers Language Proficiency, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Science. Don’t just review the content—practice answering questions under time pressure. Sharpen your analytical skills and build good test-taking habits. For guided prep, a structured review program like AHEAD’s can help you focus on the right topics and strategies. - Pack Only the Essentials
Your UPCAT kit should include your printed test permit, a valid school or government ID, at least two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, water, and a light snack. Also bring a face mask, hand sanitizer, and a light jacket if needed. Prepare everything the night before to avoid last-minute panic. - Dress Comfortably and Appropriately
Wear clothes that are breathable and comfortable enough for long hours of sitting. Avoid overly casual items like slippers or anything distracting. Remember, you’re there to focus, not to make a fashion statement. - Arrive Early
Whether you’re assigned to the morning or afternoon session, arrive at least an hour early. This gives you enough time to find your room, get settled, and calm your nerves before the exam begins. - Prioritize Your Health
UPCAT is held only once a year, so staying healthy is crucial. Avoid crowded places and unnecessary outings leading up to your exam. Get enough rest, stay hydrated, and maintain a balanced diet. Sleep at least 7–8 hours before test day so you can think clearly and stay focused. - Don’t Bring Prohibited Items
Leave your phone, smartwatch, calculator, notes, and any other electronic devices at home. These are not allowed in the testing room and could disqualify you if found in your possession. - Use Smart Test-Taking Strategies
Answer what you know first. If you get stuck, skip and come back later. Avoid blind guessing, but don’t spend too much time on one question. Practice pacing yourself with mock exams or sample tests to get used to the format and time constraints. - Submit Your Post-Test Requirements
Don’t forget that submitting your forms and documents is part of the application process. Complete Form 1 and 2B, and send your certified report cards for Grades 8–11 to the UP Office of Admissions. The deadline for submission is August 25. Stay updated through the official UP Admissions Facebook page: fb.com/UPSystemOfficeOfAdmission.
Preparation is more than just studying—it’s about setting yourself up to succeed. With these tips and the right mindset, you’ll be ready to take on the UPCAT and move one step closer to becoming a future Iskolar ng Bayan.
