One of the things students applying to colleges opt to do to increase their confidence when taking the test is to improve their vocabulary. It helps during the reading comprehension part of the test. It could help during the essay writing part of the ACET. To help you out, here are some ways to help improve your vocabulary.

1.READ
Let’s admit it. The most effective way to increase your vocabulary is through reading. It allows one to see not only how the word is spelled. Also, being able to see the full context of how the word is used might be able to help one better understand and retain said word.

In addition, there are also books that specifically aim to help improve vocabulary. For example, “Word Power Made Easy” by Norman Lewis has chapters that signify lessons. Each lesson is meant not only to help understand the words in the book, but provide the tools to infer the meaning of words that may not be in the book.

2. EXPOSE YOURSELF TO NEW FORMS OF MEDIA
There are of course other forms of media that can help increase vocabulary. For example, if one watches a movie, vlog, and the like, and note down the words they don’t understand and look it up later, they can also help.

This may be more accessible to those who don’t like to read, as it still allows one to access to a way the word is used. That way, the extra level of comprehension is still there.

3. PLAY WORD GAMES
As we know from the internet, nowadays, there are a lot of apps that challenge people to form words from a certain pool of letters. While this makes it easier to find words one isn’t familiar with, often times people come across the words by chance. If one looks for the meaning of those words, it helps build vocabulary.

There are also board games like Scrabble or Boggle, that function the same way, which one can play with friends for more fun and collective learning.

While the “use-it-a-sentence” part of vocabulary building may be lost in this method, the “practice” part will make up for it.

4. TAKE IT EASY
It may be tempting to go ham and just learn all the words you can in one sitting. But this is counterintuitive. You won’t be able to retain them all if there are too many. It’s better to have a small set of different words everyday and making sure you master them as you go along.

5. PRACTICE
In relation to taking it easy, it is also important to try to try to use these new words in your everyday life. It helps you better remember their meaning. Besides, it can make you look smart in front of your friends, which is always a plus.

It may seem difficult, but if you work hard, you can do it, and the result is worth it!
