Artificial intelligence is changing the way people work, learn, and create. But as AI becomes more visible in everyday life, an important question is emerging for educators and parents: How should young people prepare for a future that is changing so quickly?

The answer may not be to simply teach students to use the latest technology.

At the recent Agora Masterclass: The Voices of One, held as part of the Philippine Marketing Association’s 45th Anniversary Agora Awards, AHEAD Education Group Chairperson Rossana Ladaga shared an unexpected observation from her own organization: some of the strongest hesitation toward AI came not from older employees, but from younger members of the team.

The reason was particularly telling.

Some of her younger employees have friends who are artists and musicians. Seeing AI generate images, music, and other creative work made them concerned about what the technology could mean for people who had spent years developing their craft.

Their hesitation was not because they were unfamiliar with technology. It came from a genuine concern about people, creativity, and the future of work.

And perhaps that hesitation is not something we should immediately try to overcome.

The Questions Young People Are Asking Matter

For students preparing for college and eventually entering the workforce, AI raises difficult questions.

Will it replace jobs? Will creative professions still be valued? What happens when someone’s original work is used to train or generate something new without their permission? And if technology can produce an answer in seconds, how do we make sure students still learn how to arrive at answers themselves?

These are not signs that young people are resistant to progress.

They are questions worth asking.

AI will continue to develop, and students will encounter it in different ways throughout their education and careers. But preparing them for that reality should not mean telling them that they simply need to embrace AI.

It means helping them develop the judgment to understand technology, question it, and decide when it should or should not be used.

Education Should Still Put People First

Every generation has adapted to new tools. Computers changed how people work. The internet transformed how information is accessed. Smartphones changed how people communicate.

AI is another major technological development, but that does not make every use of it automatically beneficial.

Education, in particular, is about more than producing the right answer. It is about developing the ability to understand, analyze, communicate, create, and make decisions.

A student who struggles through a difficult problem may be developing skills that cannot be measured simply by the final answer. A young writer developing their own voice is building something that cannot be reduced to generating polished sentences. An aspiring artist learning their craft is developing years of observation, practice, and personal expression.

These experiences matter.

What Should Students Focus On?

Students do not need to predict exactly what technology will look like when they graduate. Instead, they can focus on developing capabilities that will remain valuable even as technology changes.

  1. Think critically.
    Information is increasingly easy to produce. Knowing whether it is accurate, useful, or biased is much harder. Students should learn to question sources, examine evidence, and form their own conclusions.
  2. Build strong foundations.
    Technology can assist with many tasks, but genuine understanding cannot be outsourced. Reading, mathematics, writing, research, and other foundational skills give students the ability to evaluate information and solve unfamiliar problems.
  3. Develop your own voice.
    Creativity comes from experience, curiosity, perspective, and personal expression. Students should have opportunities to create, experiment, and make mistakes without always relying on technology to do the work for them.
  4. Stay curious and adaptable.
    Preparing for the future does not mean knowing every new tool. It means being willing to learn, adapt, and keep growing as circumstances change.

Preparing for the Future Without Losing What Matters

For parents, the rapid development of AI can understandably feel overwhelming. It is difficult to know which technologies will still matter years from now, much less what skills today’s students will need when they enter the workforce.

Parents do not need to have all the answers. What they can do is encourage their children to ask questions, think independently, pursue their interests, and understand that learning is about more than getting the right answer.

Educators have a similar responsibility: to help students navigate a rapidly changing world while ensuring that technology does not overshadow the fundamental purpose of education, which is to help young people become capable, thoughtful, and independent individuals.

No one can say exactly what the workplace will look like when today’s students graduate. Some jobs will change. New ones may emerge. Technologies that seem unfamiliar today may eventually become commonplace.

But one thing should remain constant: the value of human potential.

Technology will continue to change. The goal of education is to make sure young people are ready to navigate that change without losing their ability to think, create, question, and decide for themselves.
